Size and Materials

Size depends on yarn and needle size used:

With DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

With Worsted Weight yarn and and 4.5 mm knitting needles (US size 7, UK size 7) finished square is approximately 26 cm x 26 cm (10 inches x 10 inches)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

Heart Dishcloth or Afghan Square

Free Knitting Pattern Heart Washcloth Afghan Squares

This was one of the first patterns I made, and revisiting it I’ve realized it wasn’t the same as the other squares. I have updated this pattern to be the same as the other squares available here. The background is stocking stitch and the pattern is now the same size.

Quick and Easy Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

Quick and Easy Baby Hat Free Knitting Pattern

If you would like to be updated every time I post a new pattern , please fill in the form ‘Subscribe to blog via email’ (on the right hand side on desktop view, or scroll down on mobile).

This free knitting pattern for a quick and easy baby hat includes 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 1-2 year sizes. Using only knit, purl and k2tog, this is an easy pattern, great for a beginning knitter, or for a quick knit in front of the TV.  It would make a great present for a new baby or knitted up for charity.

I really love charity knitting – it gives me an excuse to knit, but more importantly it is helping out those in need – and not necessarily because they cannot afford clothing themselves, sometimes just to know someone cares.

Several years ago, my home city, Christchurch in New Zealand, was hit by a massive earthquake. The destruction was something from nightmares. One of the things that still makes me smile is my son, who was about 5 at the time, coming home from school with a knitted hat. Someone  (and I wish I knew who!) had organised for lots of knitters to make hats for the children in Christchurch and thousands of children received them. Now, it wasn’t that my son needed a hat (he has a knitter for a mum, of course!) but he needed to know people cared. He was so proud of that hat, that a stranger had been thinking of him and what we were all going through and had taken the time to make it for him. Even now, 7 years on, he still has that hat stashed away in his cupboard.

Dinosaur Amigurmi

This free dinosaur amigurumi pattern is our latest creation. He’s a romping, stomping brontosaurus! I absolutely love dinosaurs, and seeing the latest Jurassic World movie inspired me to make this little guy. I hope you enjoy him as much as I do!

Materials

  • Yarn 8 ply/DK or appropriate (see note below)
  • Crochet hook (3 mm) or appropriate
  • Safety eyes (optional)
  • Stuffing

You can use any yarn and crochet hook combination that gives you good tension. Normally this would be a hook around two sizes smaller than that recommended on the yarn label. For the brontosaurus I used a 3 mm hook with approximately 120 grams of 8ply/DK acrylic yarn.

Crochet abbreviations (US terminology):

sc – single crochet

sl – slip stitch

dec – decrease

inc – increase

Size:

Using a 3 mm hook and DK/light worsted weight yarn the bear is approximately 28 cm (11 inches) long and 19 cm (8 inches) tall

Using a 2.75 mm hook and DK/light worsted weight yarn the bear is approximately 20 cm long (8 inches) and 13 cm (5 inches) tall

Using a 3 mm hook and worsted weight yarn the bear is approximately 30 cm (12 inches) long and 21 cm (8.5 inches) tall.

Materials

Yarn DK/Light Worsted weight yarn (or appropriate, see note below)

Crochet hook 3 mm or appropriate

Safety eyes and nose (optional)

Stuffing

You can use any yarn and crochet hook combination that gives you good tension. Normally this would be a hook around two sizes smaller than that recommended on the yarn label. For the bear I used a 3 mm hook with approximately 120 grams of 8ply/DK acrylic yarn.
