Heart Dishcloth or Afghan Square

Free Knitting Pattern Heart Washcloth Afghan Squares

This was one of the first patterns I made, and revisiting it I’ve realized it wasn’t the same as the other squares. I have updated this pattern to be the same as the other squares available here. The background is stocking stitch and the pattern is now the same size.

If you would like to be updated every time we post a new pattern, please fill in the form ‘Subscribe to blog via email’ (on the right hand side on desktop view or scroll down on mobile)

Size and Materials

Size depends on yarn and needle size used:

With DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

With Worsted Weight yarn and and 4.5 mm knitting needles (US size 7, UK size 7) finished square is approximately 26 cm x 26 cm (10 inches x 10 inches)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

  1. I have just discovered your wonderful dishcloth patterns! I knit to donate to a missions group for their annual fundraiser event. THANK YOU for providing so many options.

  2. This sounds like an easy and beautiful pattern! I make knitted baby caps for hospitals and I will try this pattern as a baby blanket!

  3. Love how easy your patterns are! I am currently making a blanket for my 1st daughter and plan on making both of my daughters an Afghan with their names in them! I love the variety you have with your patterns and look forward to trying MANY more!!!

    1. Glad you like it! Approximately 70 m (77 yards) of Worsted weight yarn using 4.5 mm needles, or 60 m (65 yards) of DK (double knitting) yarn using 4 mm needles.

  4. I’m loving these patterns, thank you for providing them for free. I’ve knitted about 9 squares so far & was about to start this one with the heart, but realised that the written pattern is different to the chart! There’s 63 rows on the chart (as per all the others I’ve done) but 64 in the pattern.

    1. Hi Ruth, thanks for pointing that out – this was one of my first patterns and it didn’t fit with the others, so I’ve updated the pattern and will post a new photo soon. ☺️

  5. Thank you for these beautiful patterns. I have just started a picture blanket for my granddaughter for Christmas, she loves to snuggle and I know she will love the one I’m doing.

  6. So very beautiful. Would you use cotton yarn for a dish cloth? If so, how much do you think would be needed?

  7. I’m new to knitting and found this pattern!
I’m just wondering what it means when it says
    “Even rows”

Does that mean I do the rows without rotating row 9 for the odd numbers?
    Hope this question makes sense!
    Thank you!

    1. Even rows means just the even rows e.g if it said even rows 10-14 it would be rows 10, 12 and 14. Rows 11 and 13 would be the same as all the other odd rows (row 9). Hope that helps 🙂

  8. love all your patterns did you ever try to make a yorkshire terrier one, I have 8 of them and would love to see a block like them
