Cut approximately 25 cm (10 inch) lengths of white yarn. You will need a lot – I did this by cutting a piece of card to the correct length, wrapping the yarn around the card and then cutting through all rounds. To attach one length, fold yarn in half and feed crochet hook (it is easier to use a larger hook) behind post of crocheted hair cap. Draw loop through, then pull cut ends through the loop. Once you are happy with the number of lengths of yarn you have attached to the head, pin hair to head and sew in place. With the same lengths of white yarn, repeat the process, attach yarn to lower part of face for beard.

Free Palm Tree Dishcloth or Afghan Square

Free Palm Tree Dishcloth Washcloth Afghan Square Knitting Pattern

Our latest creation is a free knitting pattern for a palm tree square.  This square would work great as a palm tree washcloth or dishcloth, or you could pair it with other squares to make an afghan or blanket. I think the castle would look great with the dolphin square, the seahorse square or the anchor square. Finished square approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

Size and Materials

Size depends on yarn and needle size used:

With DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

With Worsted Weight yarn and and 4.5 mm knitting needles (US size 7, UK size 7) finished square is approximately 26 cm x 26 cm (10 inches x 10 inches)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

Finished Size:

Approximately 29 cm (11.5 inches) long and 20 cm (8 inches) tall.

Materials
  • Yarn 8 ply/DK/Light Worsted Weight or appropriate in yellow (approx. 260 m, 285 yards) and brown (approx. 100 m, 110 yards)(see note below)
  • Crochet hook (3 mm) or appropriate
  • Safety eyes and nose (optional)
  • Stuffing

You can use any yarn and crochet hook combination that gives you good tension. Normally this would be a hook around two sizes smaller than that recommended on the yarn label. For the lion I used a 3 mm hook with 8ply/DK acrylic yarn.

Crochet abbreviations (US terminology):

sc – single crochet

dec – decrease

inc – increase

blo – crochet through back loops only

Stuff foot and straight part of leg well. Very lightly stuffing the top (thigh) part of leg.

Making up:

Pin all of the legs to the body to find correct placement before sewing to attach. Fold ears in half and pin to head to find correct placement before sewing in place. Pin tail to body to find correct placement before sewing in place.

Mane:

Cut approximately 15 cm (6 inch) lengths of brown yarn for mane. You will need a lot – I did this by wrapping the yarn around my hand and then cutting through all rounds.

To attach one length, fold yarn in half and feed crochet hook (it is easier to use a larger hook) behind post.
