Free Christmas Themed Dishcloth and Afghan Squares Knitting Patterns

Free Christmas Washcloths and Afghan Squares Knitting Patterns

As the number of my free washcloth and afghan square knitting patterns has grown, I’ve decided it’s time to start categorizing them to make various themes easier to find. I’ve put the links to all the knitting patterns for Christmas themed squares on this post. This, I hope, will make it easier to find them and also maybe spark some inspiration for some Christmas themed afghans and washcloths!

Making these squares, I used Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash. I absolutely love this yarn, it’s 100% wool, machine washable AND can be tumble dried (so great for baby blankets)! The wool is also very soft, and knits up with wonderful stitch definition, which is fantastic for these squares. As 220 Superwash comes in an amazing 135 different shades the colour combinations are almost endless! One ball makes 3 and a bit squares using 4.0 mm needles.

Using this yarn (which is DK or light worsted weight) and 4 mm knitting needles the squares come out at approximately 22 cm square (8.66 inches) after blocking. All the squares on Daisy and Storm are the same size, so as long as you use the same yarn for each they will come out the same size (beware, different brands of yarn, even though they might say they are the same weight, are not always the same thickness as each other and so may not make squares the same size).

  6. Hi once again thank you for all of your beautiful patterns & your hard work.I was
wondering do you plan on making any more Lighthouse patterns?
Happy Holidays to all of you. Linda

    1. Hi Linda and thank you! I don’t plan on more light houses just now – I have a list about 30 squares long to make at the moment, but I will keep it in mind for when I finish all those

  7. I have a question!!!! I love this pattern. Can I change the dimensions to make this pattern into a placemat for Christmas? If so, can I use the same kind of yarn? Thank you!!

    1. Hi Ella, you could extend the border out to make placemats, just cast on extra stitches and use extra seed stitch (K1,P1) to make the border to the size you want. I’d use cotton or acrylic yarn to make placemats – Lovecrafts have lots of cotton here https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-au/l/yarns/yarns-by-fibre/100-cotton?utm_medium=affiliate&a_aid=d467f28c or acrylic here https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-au/l/yarns/yarns-by-fibre/acrylic-yarn?utm_medium=affiliate&a_aid=d467f28c

  8. I went back to knitting a couple of years ago but I have only been knitting afgan squares and making them into blankets for rescue dogs homes. I came across your site as I wanted to make something a bit more interesting on the squares. I love all your different patterns which I am making into more blankets. I know that this is probably not what these patterns were intended for but I am sure they will look okay. Many thanks for all your hard work.

    1. Thanks, Pat! And I’m so happy the patterns are being used to make blankets for rescue dogs – what a wonderful thing to do! I love charity knitting and belong to a couple of local groups who knit for babies and children in need.
