After playing around a lot with different stitches and techniques, I’ve decided I really like the look of crochet bobble stitch for my afghan (even though it’s a yarn eater!). It also makes the fabric really thick which will be great for keeping warm this winter! However, using the charts you could easily make this pattern using c2c crochet or use it as a cross stitch pattern.

My plan is to make a series of these afghan blocks to sew together into an afghan. The block has a lot of space at the top for a reason – it’s for when I make our dear Keeper of Keys and Grounds (he really is a giant!).

The next bobble stitch Harry Potter square is coming soon.

Materials and Size

For the rectangle I used dk/light worsted weight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook. Yardage for each colour is based on dk/light worsted weight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook, however you can use any size yarn and hook combination you like, just please be aware that this will change the size of the finished rectangle and the yardage required.

Finished size: 20 cm by 36 cm (7.9” by 14.2”)

Purple yarn (for background) – 121 m (133 yards)

Black yarn – 53 m (58 yards)

Flesh coloured yarn – 20 m (22 yards)

White coloured yarn – 0.5 m (0.6 yards)

Stitch Explanations

Bobble Stitch – The bobble stitch is made up of 4 incomplete dc stitches. To do this: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch you inserted the hook into, yarn over and pull through two stitches on hook (2 stitches left on hook). Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch again, yarn over, pull through stitch you inserted hook into, yarn over and pull through two stitches on hook (3 stitches left on hook). Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch again, yarn over, pull through stitch you inserted hook into, yarn over and pull through two stitches on hook (4 stitches left on hook). Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch again, yarn over, pull through stitch you inserted hook into, yarn over and pull through two stitches on hook (5 stitches left on hook). Yarn over and pull through all five stitches on hook.

DIY from home has a great video tutorial showing how to make bobble stitches

(although I used 4 rather than 5 incomplete dc stitches)

Or for those of you who prefer diagrams rather than videos, hobby craft have some great illustrations

(although, again, I used 4 rather than 5 incomplete dc stitches)

When working the bobble stitches the wrong side of the work will be facing you (the bobbles form on the other side of your work)

Changing colour in sc – insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through (2 stitches on hook), yarn over with new colour and pull through both stitches on hook.

Crochet Dreams has a great video on this

Or Malloo Knits have great diagrams

Graph Instructions

Each square on the graph represents both the foundation row for each bobble row (sc row on right side of work) and the bobble row itself (1 bobble and 1 sc on wrong side of work) (i.e. the two sc stitches in the foundation row, and then a bobble stitch and an sc stitch in the bobble row).

Squiggles Newborn Baby Hat & Booties Set

squiggles baby set free knitting pattern hat booties newborn

This newborn baby hat and booties set is super cute. The free pattern for the hat is knitted in the round which means there are no seams to sew (yay!), the booties do need a little seaming across the sole and up the back, but there’s not picking up stitches (another yay!) and the squiggly rib pattern is pretty while being suitable for both a baby girl or boy. The top of the hat also looks awesome:

squiggles baby set free knitting pattern hat booties newborn

The hat I made is off to charity (since my goal this year is to make as many items as possible for good causes!), but you’re welcome to use the pattern as you wish – for yourself, for charity or to make items to sell. However, please don’t post this pattern elsewhere, rather link back to my site.

I have lots of other free knitting pattern too – check them out here.

If you would like to be updated every time I post a new pattern, please fill in the form ‘Subscribe to blog via email’ (on the right hand side on desktop view or scroll down on mobile)

Materials

80 m (87 yards) DK/Light worsted weight yarn)

4 mm (US 6/UK 8) double pointed needles for hat (4 mm straight needles for booties, or you can use two of the double pointed needles and knit flat with these)

1 m (1 yard) of ribbon

sewing needle to seam booties and weave in ends on hat

I knitted the hat with 4 mm double pointed needles and 8 ply (light worsted weight) yarn. I used Naturally Loyal Machine Washable DK/8ply in Grape (shade 981) and one ball made both the hat and booties with a little left over (you need approximately 80 m (87 yards), but of course you can use any type of yarn you wish). You could knit this with thicker yarn, but of course it would change the size.

Size

The finished hat is approximately 24 cm (9.5″) unstretched, and 36 cm stretched (14.25″), and the sole of the booties measure 8 cm 3.25″ so perfect for a newborn. You’ll need approximately 80 m (87 yards) of yarn to make both the booties and hat and 4 mm double pointed needles. The booties can be knitted on straight needles.

Abbreviations

k – knit

p – purl

yo – yarn over (wrap yarn around the needle to create another stitch)

k2tog – knit two stitches together

k2tog tbl – knit two stitches together through the back loops (rather than the front of stitches that are usually used for knitting)

p2tog – purl two stitches together

sl – slip stitch (slip onto the next needles without knitting the stitch)

psso – pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (lift the slipped stitch up, over the knitted stitch and off the needle)

turn – turn work without completing the row

m1 – make a new stitch by picking up a loop from the row below (alternatively you could increase knit wise by knitting into the front and back of the next stitch)

Size and Materials

Size depends on yarn and needle size used – with DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

Purple yarn (for background) – 108 m (119 yards)

Grey yarn – 4 m (5 yards)

Green yarn – 22 m (25 yards)

Black yarn – 41 m (45 yards)

Flesh coloured yarn – 18 m (20 yards)

Free Knitting Pattern Squirrel Washcloth Afghan Square

Our latest creation is a free knitting pattern for a squirrel afghan square or washcloth square!  This square would work great as a washcloth or dishcloth, or you could put it together with some of the other squares to make an afghan or blanket (all my squares are the same size). Finished square approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

Purple yarn – 125 m (137 yards)

Dark grey yarn – 6 m (7 yards)

Light grey yarn – 7 m (8 yards)

Black yarn – 25 m (27 yards)

Yellow yarn – 2 m (3 yards)

Red yarn – 3 m (4 yards)

White yarn – 2 m (3 yards)

Flesh coloured yarn – 20 m (22 yards)

Orange yarn – 22 m (23 yards)

The yellow and red combination squares are worked using a strand of red and a strand of yellow at the same time. These bobbles can be reduced to 3 incomplete dc stitches instead of 4 (or you can use a lighter weight yarn).

The yellow and red combination squares are worked using a strand of red and a strand of yellow at the same time. These bobbles can be reduced to 3 incomplete dc stitches instead of 4 (or you can use a lighter weight yarn).

Free Harry Potter Bobble Stitch Crochet Afghan Square

Free Bobble Stitch Crochet Pattern Harry Potter Afghan Square

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a Harry Potter themed afghan for a while now. After playing around a lot with different stitches and techniques, I’ve decided I really like the look of crochet bobble stitch (even though it’s a yarn eater!). It also makes the fabric really thick which will be great for keeping warm this winter! My plan is to make a series of these afghan squares (although they’re actually rectangular) to sew together into an afghan. The square has a lot of space at the top for a reason – it’s for when I make our dear Keeper of Keys and Grounds (he really is a giant!). The next bobble stitch Harry Potter square is coming soon (get your orange yarn ready!).

If you would like to be updated every time I post a new pattern, please fill in the form ‘Subscribe to blog via email’ (on the right hand side on desktop view, or scroll down on mobile).

Purple yarn – 125 m (137 yards)

Dark grey yarn – 6 m (7 yards)

Light grey yarn – 7 m (8 yards)

Black yarn – 35 m (38 yards)

Yellow yarn – 2 m (3 yards)

Red yarn – 3 m (4 yards)

White yarn – 2 m (3 yards)

Flesh coloured yarn – 20 m (22 yards)

The yellow and red combination squares are worked using a strand of red and a strand of yellow at the same time. These bobbles can be reduced to 3 incomplete dc stitches instead of 4 (or you can use a lighter weight yarn).
