Size and Materials

With DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches). I highly recommend Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Yarn.

With Worsted Weight yarn and and 4.5 mm knitting needles (US size 7, UK size 7) finished square is approximately 26 cm x 26 cm (10 inches x 10 inches). I highly recommend Cascade 220 (Aran)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

Joining Row Instructions

  • If you used the cast on two extra stitches and slip the first stitch of every row and knit the last stitch of every row, following the pattern between these stitches, join the strips of squares together as follows (in which ever order of strips you prefer) – Sl1, K43, K2tog, K2tog from next square, K43, K2tog, K2tog from next square K43, K2tog, K2tog from next square, K43, K2tog, K2 tog from next square, K to end (182 stitches). Then follow the pattern below, again slipping the first stitch and knitting the last stitch of every row, working the pattern between these stitches.
  • If you knitted the patterns without the extra stitches, just knit across all 4 strips (180 stitches)

  • If you cast off the square panels, cast on 180 stitches (or pick up 45 stitches along the top of each square – 180 stitches in total)

Cast off.

Sew together the seams between the strips as close to the edge as possible (I recommend using mattress stitch). Weave in any ends, and then block the afghan.
