I have had many requests for zodiac/star sign squares, and zodiac themed items are immensely popular at the moment, so I’ve designed an afghan with all the signs. Of course, the squares can be knitted individually as washcloths too, or incorporated into an afghan of your choosing. For the Zodiac Afghan shown, there are 16 of the regular sized squares – one of each of the star signs and one for each of the elements those star signs are connected to, and one large “The Zodiac” square.
Size and Materials
With 4 mm knitting needles and DK (light worsted weight) yarn, the final measurements (after blocking) are 94 cm wide and 100 cm tall.
I’ve knitted the blanket in four vertical strips (e.g. the ‘Fire’ square and the three fire star signs) with the horizontal borders between each square in the strip being shared.
When using 4 mm knitting needles, each vertical strip requires approximately 210 m of dk yarn and the larger ‘The Zodiac’ square requires approximately 250 m of DK yarn.
I used Cascade 220 Superwash (lovely and soft, pure wool and machine washable and dryable!). Colours used were Fire signs – Pumpkin, Earth signs – Pistachio Green, Water signs – Blue, Air signs – Yellow and for The Zodiac rectangle – Iris.
For The Zodiac rectangle I need two balls of Cascade 220 Superwash, but for most of the long strips I only needed one ball, except for the blue which I needed just a tiny bit more for – I’d recommend ordering 2 for each to be sure you have enough, or using slightly smaller needles (3.75 mm) if you want to be sure to only need one ball for each strip.
Tip
For each square, I cast on two extra stitches not included in the pattern, forming one extra stitch at the end of each row. By having two extra stitches and always slipping the first stitch p wise, following the pattern, and then knitting the last stitch of the row, it leaves a nice, neat edge along the edges of the afghan and makes sewing together much easier. These two stitches are not included in the written pattern or chart. You are welcome to choose whether to do these extra two stitches or not.
When will the patterns be available?
Each week I will release two squares, starting with the Fire signs, so if you would like to follow the pattern along then be sure to subscribe to my mailing list so you are updated each time a new pattern is released.
The first square is the ‘Fire’ word square, which you can find by clicking the link below – I will update the list below as the patterns are released. Remember, if you are making the afghan as pictured, do not cast off after finishing the first square – Sagittarius continues from the top of the ‘Fire’ square.
Air Square (Note, I mixed up the water and air signs in the finished afghan above – this will be corrected in the pattern)
Water Square (Note, I mixed up the water and air signs in the finished afghan above – this will be corrected in the pattern – silly me for assuming Aquarius was a water sign!)
I love this! Your squares look great and I can’t wait to get started!!
Thanks Sande 😊
I can’t wait for you to post the Capricorn and Gemini
Absolutely love this idea. I will be knitting along each week for sure.
Do I need to use Cascade Yarn because I don’t see it at Joann’s or Michael’s.
No, you could use a different yarn, but that may slightly change the size of the finished Afghan.
I notice that there are no charts for the Leo, Sagittarius and Earth squares or at least I could not find them. Can you help? Thanks
Hi Maryanne, the links to all the squares as I put them up are on this page https://daisyandstorm.com/2021/03/14/free-zodiac-dishcloths-or-afghan-squares-knitting-patterns/ if you scroll down you’ll find the links you’re looking for. Thanks 😊
Hi,
Would I be able to make the blanket in cotton?
Was thinking that it would make a nice gift as a wedding anniversary present.
Thank you.
