As the number of my free washcloth and afghan square patterns has grown, I’ve decided it’s time to start categorizing them to make various themes easier to find. I’ve put the links to all the dog themed squares on this post. This, I hope, will make it easier to find them and also maybe spark some inspiration for some doggie themed afghans! These could be great to give to a local animal shelter, if you’re feeling in the charity knitting mood.

Making these squares, I used Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash. I absolutely love this yarn, it’s 100% wool, machine washable AND can be tumble dried (so great for baby blankets)! The wool is also very soft, and knits up with wonderful stitch definition, which is fantastic for these squares. As 220 Superwash comes in an amazing 135 different shades the colour combinations are almost endless! One ball makes 3 and a bit squares using 4.0 mm needles.

Using this yarn (which is DK or light worsted weight) and 4 mm knitting needles the squares come out at approximately 22 cm square (8.66 inches) after blocking. All the squares on Daisy and Storm are the same size, so as long as you use the same yarn for each they will come out the same size (beware, different brands of yarn, even though they might say they are the same weight, are not always the same thickness as each other and so may not make squares the same size).

  1. I have just finished a blanket for my new grandchild. Knitted an assortment of squares, dog, cow ,camel, love heart, hoyse, fish, whale etc.
Joined all the squares and put a fabric backing on it.
So happy. Thank you for the patterns

  2. i would like to make a blanket with 9 squares in double knitting wool, please can you explain how much wool i would need. Thank you.

    1. Hi Margaret, each square uses around 70 m of dk yarn with 4 mm needles – so 9 squares would need 630 m approximately

  3. Good morning Heather. I have just found your website. I work with a local animal rescue. I would like to make some of the cloths to sell as a fundraiser for this rescue. All proceeds will go to the rescue. Am I allowed to do so?
