Free Horse Dishcloth or Afghan Square Knitting Pattern

free horse dishcloth washcloth afghan square knitting pattern

Our latest creation is a free knitting pattern for a horse afghan square or washcloth square!  This square would work great as a washcloth or dishcloth, or you could put it together with some of the other squares to make an afghan or blanket (all my squares are the same size). Finished square approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

Size and Materials

Size depends on yarn and needle size used – with DK/Light Worsted Weight yarn and 4 mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles, finished squares are approximately 22 cm x 22 cm (8.5 inches x 8.5 inches)

Any sized needle and yarn can be used (please refer to yarn label for recommended needle size), however different needle and yarn sizes will produce different sized squares, so if you plan to make an afghan or a set of these it is best to use the same needle size and yarn for each square.

  1. Thank you for always giving chart instructions as well as written instructions, yours is one of the few sites that does. You give us the opportunity to use these images on lots of other projects as well.

  2. thank you for another lovely pattern square. i am trying to make each one and put together a blanket, cover for my daughter.

  3. I’m planning on using the horse pattern as a blanket cover. I wanted to alternate it with something and realized the alphabet letter “U” would make a perfect horseshoe. Thank you for the free patterns.

  4. Nancy mention a error in which you responded, and said all fixed now. Yet the pattern as stayed the same. Row 36. Which is right the written one or what Nancy said….It is a stunning square, going to use it as a baby shawl.

    1. Hi Glenda – row 36 is definitely right on the pattern (the error wasn’t the k stitch in the comment, it was another error 😊 so definitely all sorted)

  5. Thank you for the pattern.
On line 42 at the end is wrong, it adds up to 44 sts.
Can you please help. Thanking you in advance.
    Sorry it,s the horse pattern.

  6. Thank you so much for this pattern. I’ve been looking for a horse pattern. I can’t wait to try this..

  7. Thank you for this horse pattern. It is the first thing that I have knitted with a pattern. I made a few mistakes but my wife was able to fix them for me. It will be a gift for a friend who keeps ponies.
I am will try the shark square next. I did ask my wife if I could do the square in blue and the shark in white, but she suggested I was not quite up to that level.
This has been a great introduction to knitting for me. Thanks again.
