Finished doll is approximately 34 cm (13.5 inches) tall. The little bear is approximately 7 cm (2.8) inches tall.
Materials:
3.25 mm (UK 10, US 3) Knitting needles.
Wool (8 ply/DK) (all of these are small amounts, perfect for using up oddments):
Blue (pants & top)
Flesh (tops of feet, hands & head)
White (slippers, bunny ears, pants)
Dark Brown (hair)
Light Brown (teddy)
Green (hot water bottle)
Small amounts of black and pink embroidery thread for bunny eyes & nose.
Either small amount of black embroidery thread or two safety eyes for the eyes.
Abbreviations: k = knit p = purl inc = increase by knitting/purling twice into the same stitch k2tog = knit two stitches together p2tog = purl two stitches together st = stitch st-st = stocking stitch beg – beginning B&T = break yarn and thread loose end through stitches on needle, pull yarn to gather tightly and fasten off Doll Main body (beginning at feet):
Right leg: With white, cast on 7 sts, mark 7th st, then cast on 10 sts – 17 sts
Row 1 – p row
Row 2 – inc k wise into every st – 34 sts
Row 3-11 – beg with a p row st-st 9 rows
Row 12 – k4, (k2tog) 9 times, k12 – 25 sts
Row 13 – k row Break off white and join on flesh
Row 14 – k4, (k2tog) 5 times, k11 – 20 sts
Row 15 – p row Row 16 – k2, (k2tog) 4 times, k10 – 16 sts
Break off flesh and join on blue
Rows 17-19 – p row
Row 20 – k row
Row 21 – p row
Join white
Rows 22-25 – st-st
Change to blue
Rows 26-29 – st-st
Work the previous 8 rows (one blue and one white stripe of 4 rows each) four times in total.
Change to white
Rows 54-57 – st-st You should now have 10 stripes in total. Leave these sts on a holder and knit left leg.
Left leg:
With white, cast on 11 sts, mark 11th st, then cast on 6 sts – 17 sts
Row 1 – p row
Row 2 – inc k wise into every st – 34 sts
Row 3-11 – beg with a p row st-st 9 rows Row 12 – k12, (k2tog) 9 times, k4 – 25 sts
Row 13 – k row Break off white and join on flesh Row 14 – k11, (k2tog) 5 times, k4 – 20 sts Row 15 – p row Row 16 – k9, (k2tog) 4 times, k3 – 16 sts
Break off flesh and join on blue
Row 17-19 – p row
Row 20 – k row
Row 21 – p row Join white Rows 2
22-25 – st-st Change to blue Rows
26-29 – st-st
Work the previous 8 rows (one blue and one white stripe of 4 rows each) four times in total
Change to white Rows 54-57 – st-st
You should now have 10 stripes in total.
Body:
Change to blue
Row 1 – k all sts of left leg, then k across all sts of right leg – 32 sts
Row 2 – p row
Row 3 – (k6, k2tog) 4 times – 28 sts
Row 4 – p row Change to white
Row 5-6 – st-st Change to blue
Row 7 – k row
Row 8 – k row
Rows 9-30 – st-st
Row 31 – (k2, k2tog) 7 times – 21 sts
Row 32 – p row
Row 33 – (k, k2tog) 7 times – 14 sts
Row 34 – k row Join flesh
Row 35 – (k2tog) 7 times – 7 sts
Rows 36 – p row
Row 37-38 – st-st
Row 39 – inc k wise into every st – 14 sts
Row 40 – p row
Row 41 – inc k wise into every st – 28 sts
Row 42 – p row
Row 43 – (k1, inc) 14 times – 42 sts
Rows 44-60 – starting with a p row, st-st 17 rows
Row 61 – (k1, dec) 14 times – 28 sts
Row 62 – p row
Row 63 – (k2tog) 7 times – 14 sts
Row 64 – p row
Row 65 (k2tog) 7 times – 7 sts
B&T The marked stitches of the foot represent the centre front of each foot. Pin the foot together so these marks are at the centre front and then sew the sole and side of the foot. Stuff the foot. Sew together row ends of legs, keeping stripes aligned. The seam should run up the inside of the legs. Stuff legs. Sew together row ends of body, stuffing as you go. If you wish to place safety eyes, do this before sewing and stuffing the head. These are placed 14 rows from the top of the head. Sew together row ends of neck and finally the head, again stuffing as you go.
Arms beginning at hands – make two:
With flesh, cast on 6 sts
Row 1 – inc k wise into every st – 12 sts
Row 2-6 – starting with a p row, st-st 5 rows
Change to blue
Row 7 – k row
Row 8 – k row
Rows 9-28 – beg with k row, st-st 20 rows
Row 29 – cast off 2 sts, k to end of row – 10 sts
Row 30 – cast off 2 sts, p to end of row – 8 sts
Row 31-34 – st-st, casting off 1 st at either end of every row – 4 sts
Cast off.
Gather around cast on edge and pull tight. Sew together row ends of hand with flesh coloured yarn. Sew together row ends of sleeves with blue coloured yarn. Stuff arms lightly. Position on body so that the cast-off edge is at the top to form the shoulder and sew into place.
Hair:
With dark brown, cast on 25 sts
Row 1 – k row
Row 2 – p row
Row 3 – p row
Row 4 – k row
Repeat these four rows 9 more times
Decrease for fringe:
Row 1 – k row – 25 sts
Row 2 – p row
Row 3 – p row
Row 4 – cast off 13 sts, k to end of row – 12 sts
Row 5 – k row
Row 6 – p row
Row 7 – p row
Row 8 – k row
Repeat the last four rows 3 more times.
Row 1 – k row
Row 2 – p row
Row 3 – p row
Cast off.
Sew together the cast-off edge with part of the cast on edge as shown.
Gather around the row ends shown at the top of the photo to form the top of the head and pull tightly. Fasten off. Attach hair to head.
Bunny ears for slippers (make 4):
With white, cast on 6 sts
Rows 1-8 – beg with k row, st-st 8 rows
B & T
Sew together the row ends. Attach ears to foot by the cast on end of the ears. Using black thread stitch eyes on to each slipper. Using pink thread stitch nose on to each slipper.
Bear
Body starting at the bottom:
In light brown, cast on 9 sts
Row 1 – inc k wise into every st – 18 sts
Row 2-18 – beg with p row, st-st 17 rows
Row 19 – (k2tog) 9 times – 9 sts
B & T
Sew together the row ends and then stuff. Gather around the cast on edge, pull tight and fasten off.
Count down 8 rows from the top. Gather around with brown yarn, pull tight and fasten off to form neck.
Ears – make two
With light brown, cast on 6
Row 1 – k row
Row 2 – p row
B&T
Sew together row ends and flatten piece. Position and attach cast on edge of ears to the head.
Legs – make two
With light brown, cast on 8 sts.
Rows 1-4 – beg with k row, st-st 4 rows
Row 5 – (k2tog) 4 times
B & T
Sew together row ends. Position and attach legs by the cast on edge to base of the bear.
Arms – make two
With light brown, cast on 6 sts
Rows 1-6 – beg with k row, st-st 6 rows
Row 7 – (k2tog) 3 times
B & T
Sew together row ends. Position and attach the cast on edge of the arms to just below the neck.
Hot water bottle
With green, cast on 18 sts
Rows 1-14 – beg with k row, st-st 14 rows
Row 15 – (k2tog) 9 times – 9 sts
Row 16 – p1, p2 tog – 6 sts
Rows 17-19 – beg with k row, st-st 3 rows
Cast off.
Sew together row ends. Sew together cast on edge.
This little girl will make a great sleepy-time companion for a couple of little girls I know.
